RE: Petition for Two Alternative Routes for the Ride-On 70
Traffic is getting heavy and congested on Route 355 (NIH/Bethesda Naval) area. This is getting worse everyday. To make matters worse, between now and September 2011, when DOD combines the staff from Walter Reed with Bethesda Naval, traffic congestion will get terrible since more cars will be entering the Bethesda Naval Hospital and there will obviously be more ridership on Ride-On 70 bus.
To alleviate the problem, we, the undersigned strongly urge Montgomery County implement two express bus routes replacing the current Rider-On 70 with the same schedule and same route (remaining in Germantown and Bethesda):
AM
1) from Germantown Milestone to NIH express
2) from Germantown to Bethesda Transit Center (via Old Georgetown Road) express
PM
1) from NIH to Germantown Milestone express
2) from Bethesda Transit Center (via Old Georgetown Road) to Germantown Milestone express.

To Whom It May Concern:
I would like to let you know the traffic between the Naval Hospital / NIH and the Beltway on route 355 seems to get worse and worse every day. I am deeply concerned when the Base Realignment starts next year, w/ Walter Reed employees reporting to the Naval Hospital facilities, the traffic will get even worse to the point of grid-lock.
I take advantage of public transportation by taking the Express Ride-On bus #70 from Germantown-Milestone to Bethesda Metro. Whenever the bus goes through the Naval Hospital/ NIH facilities in the afternoon, it takes the bus at least 20-30 minutes to get through 3 miles of traffic from NIH to the beltway.
I am writing to y'all today to consider adding another express bus route that can originate/terminate in Bethesda Metro and go directly (via Old Georgetown road and 270) to Germantown-Milestone. Of course the existing express bus route (70) can remain and can originate directly from the Naval Hospital/NIH to Germantown Milestone to service the employees working in those facilities.
Please consider this low cost request that will save people time and aggravation from having to sit in traffic while using public transportation.
Very Respectfully,
Response by Ike Leggett:
Thank you for your recent email regarding a new express Route 70B. We understand the difficulties in maneuvering through congestion; however, to create a new route that bypasses the Medical Center Metro Station in the afternoon would not be utilizing our resources efficiently. There are options available with the Red Line from Shady Grove to Medical Center, although this would require additional transfers as opposed to a one-seat ride.
It is important to note that in order to create a new routing, additional resources would be needed during the peak hour service that are not available at this time. We will however, keep your suggestion on file for consideration when additional resources do become available to warrant additional services. In the meantime, we will continue to monitor the ridership by stops and time of day to determine the demand from Bethesda to Milestone.
Thank you for your comments and support in public transportation. If you should have additional comments or questions, please call Philip McLaughlin, Manager of Operations Planning at 240-777-5825 or email at philip.mclaughlin@montgomerycountymd.gov.
Sincerely,
Ike Leggett
County Executive
